We have spent a lot of time looking for living room side table ideas over the last few years. Side tables are one of those things that you don’t necessarily want to be a focal point, but you don’t want them to be boring either.
12 Living Room Side Table Ideas
We have seen a lot of really basic side tables in client’s homes that were chosen purely for function. They hold a drink, a remote, and a book and that was all that could be said for them.
We think that side tables play an important role in finishing off the room, and can really influence the way the style leans in the space. Below are 12 of our favorites that work with just about any style, are polished and interesting, but still fit in that supporting role a side table needs to fill.
These are some of our favorite side tables that we specify for our clients, and we can special order them. Prices range from $199 to $899, contact us to get more information!
Best Tips for Selecting a Side Table
Design is about details, and the smallest details can be the difference between loving your side table and despising it.
Tip 1: Keep the height of your table about 2 inches below the arm of your sofa or chair. If it’s higher than the arm, you can easily catch the edge when you go to set something down.
Tip 2: Scale is important. Side tables come in a range of sizes, and in general, larger tables (24″ and wider) should go on either end of a sofa and smaller tables (22″ and smaller) should go next to a chair.
Tip 3: Shape is important too. You know the saying “you can’t put a round peg in a square hole”. Well you shouldn’t put a rectangle table in a squared off space.
Think about your layout from a top down view. If the empty space where the side table will go is a square shape, go for a square or round table. If it’s not perfectly square, a rectangle table will probably be better. Round can also work, but refer back to tip 2 and make sure the scale is right.
