It’s the 3rd and last post for hair week. If you missed the first two make sure you check them out! We laid the foundation for a great short haircut (even with fine hair) on Day 1, and Day 2 was styling videos for straight hair with volume. Today, it’s all about how to style short hair with waves.
How to Style Short Hair with Waves
Day Three:
If you are keeping track from the other posts, you know that I haven’t washed my hair since day 1. I go into more detail on Day 2, but short hair usually looks better and holds more volume when it’s a little dirty. This is especially true for styling waves in short, fine hair. Fine hair is notorious for not holding curl, but when it’s a little dirty and has the right products, the curl will stay all day.
Prep with Dry Shampoo
Prep your hair with the secret weapon for short hair, dry shampoo. In the video I’m using Oribe Gold Lust Dry Shampoo from my latest BirchBox and it’s great. I also love Amika, R+CO and Klorane for more affordable options.
Spray dry shampoo all over your head, aiming for the roots. Allow to dry, a minute or so.
Use your fingers to loosely arrange your hair. My hair is always standing up at odd angles after I spray with dry shampoo, so just calm it down a little.
Curl with Flat Iron
Use your flat iron to curl your hair. Think of it more like you are “bending” your hair than curling it. You don’t want ringlets. Start with the flat iron about an inch or so away from your roots, bend the section of hair, release the iron a little bit and bend some more a little further down. Always curl away from your face.
It will take some practice to get the bending/curling right. How much curl you can add to each length of hair depends on how long it is. I can add more to the long pieces at the front of my face than I can to what is at the back of my head. In the back, my strategy is really just to make it look kind of messy.
Apply Kuene Volumizing Powder to the roots just in places where you want to add a little more volume. I usually do the crown of my head and the back. Massage in with your fingers. Go lightly with this product, a little goes a long way!
Spray with hairspray.
I’m calling this Day 3 hair, but I often do it on Day 2. This style is not ideal for the day that you wash your hair, particularly if you have fine hair, but you could probably get away with it if you used a lot of volumizing powder.
