Sometimes I just get the urge to paint something. Does that ever happen to you? I’ve painted my fair share of furniture makeovers in the last 4 years, but it had been a while. I missed my paintbrush. After buying several pieces from an estate sale auction (including this mirror), my plan was to paint and sell them.
I decided a while ago that I shouldn’t buy anything with the purpose of selling it if it wouldn’t work in my own home. The selling game has been fickle for me in the past, and sometimes it’s a lot of hassle to sell on craigslist. So I tend to buy things that I know I could use, and make them over in neutral colors (which also tends to help them sell faster).
Here’s what keeps happening though. I fall in love with the piece I made over and never end up selling it. Like this lovely little marble topped side table.
Furniture Makeovers
The table used to look like this:
I sanded the table down, covered the marble top with a plastic bag, and taped around the base of the marble with painters tape. Then I took it outside and gave it a few coats of Rustoleum’s Heirloom White in Satin.
Something marble was on my wish list for the living room (see the in progress post), and we also needed a side table for this chair. It’s nice to read with a cup of coffee in this chair, and now we have a place to set our cups down! Furniture makeovers don’t have to be a huge project to make a big impact.
While I had the spray paint out, I wanted to update some pottery I had.
My living room used to have a lot of orange in it. I got rid of all the orange, but I still really like the shape of these pieces. My philosophy is if you can’t sell it for much, and you can’t use it like it is, paint it! Painting doesn’t always salvage the piece, and sometimes it goes in the trash after I’ve tried to “fix” it. But it’s always worth a shot in my opinion. I didn’t have the best of conditions when I painted these. It was just a little windy and I had them sitting on packing paper. The paint came off in a couple of places because the paper blew and stuck to it. The little piece is probably headed to the trash, but I am quite happy with the larger piece.
I didn’t get to use my paintbrush, but I still got my paint fix for a while. Have you painted anything lately?
