The title really should be “How to Mix Dining Room Tables and Chairs and Bar Stools and Not Go Crazy”. But that felt a little too long. ;-). Seriously though, a lot of kitchens have eat in spaces now, which means that there are a lot of elements (and legs) that you have to consider when selecting tables and seating for the eat in kitchen.
How To Mix Dining Room Tables and Chairs
Abby and I are both knee deep in selecting chairs and barstools for our own eat in kitchens, so we are ready with all the tips for mixing it up.
#1 – It doesn’t all have to match. It can all match, if you are the type of person who really needs things to match. Matching sets do lend more formality to a room, and if you do go with a dining table/chair matching set, try to mix it up with a bar stool that feels different.
#2- Mix feminine and masculine lines. Or if it’s easier, think about it as straight lines and curved lines. If the table is very angular, very strait legs, not much detailing, consider doing a dining chair with a curved back.
#3 – Mix materials. If the dining table and chairs are all wood, consider a bar stool with a metal frame.
#4 – Add texture. If all the pieces are shiny and smooth, it can feel repetitive. Use wicker/rattan, leather, caning, linen, and woven textures to add texture.
#5 – Use black somewhere in the mix. We are huge advocates for black makes it better. Whether it’s a black table, a black chair or barstool, or just a touch of black in the pattern or texture, black adds grounding and focus to the space.
We hope you feel more confident in how to mix dining room tables and chairs (and barstools), but if you need more help or are interested in more information about any of the pieces we shared, please contact us.
