A lot of our clients come to us never having worked with an interior designer before. It’s a brand new experience, and they aren’t sure what the process is like. We are going to share the behind the scenes of a client presentation in case you also haven’t worked with a designer in the past.
Behind the Scenes of a Client Presentation
There are definitely a lot of steps that come before the client presentation, but because most often the questions we get around the process are “what exactly do you do for us”, or “what do we receive from you”, we thought we would jump ahead to that step in the process and show you!
Before the presentation, we’ve met with the client in their home, gathered a lot of information about their space (or if it’s a new build, all the details about exactly what they’re building), about their style and functionality needs, and their budget.
From there, we go back to the office and create a design specific to the client. We create a floor plan to scale for furniture placement, we create a mood board to illustrate the furnishings and finishes we would like to use, and we gather any physical materials we can to allow the client to be able to see and feel an example of what will be in their home.
Because the designs we create for our clients are proprietary to them, we will show you some examples of the above that we created for our own personal spaces.
The Floor Plan
The floor plan is always first. Always. The flow of the room, what size furniture will fit comfortably, those are the most important decisions and have to be done first. Sometimes we come up with a completely different layout than the client had in the room, other times we make small changes or add or take away a few pieces.
This is the floor plan for Shandy’s living room.
The Mood Board
The mood board is how we help the client envision how all the pieces work together and tell a story. We gather images of the actual pieces for the design so the client can see how the shapes and colors work together.
We also show up close images when we need to so that we can draw attention to important details. Like the beautiful brass legs on this chair.
The Feedback
Revisions are a normal part of the design process. Usually there are just a few small things that need switched out, and it’s not uncommon to need to show a client several pieces of art before we land on the perfect piece.
The Budget
Then we go over the budget for the project and let the client know what it will cost for us to order, receive, inspect, deliver and install every item from their design.
Collected Living Design is a full service design firm, and a huge benefit of working with us is that we take on all of the stress of ordering and taking care of any damaged product for you.
We then coordinate all the delivery people to have your pieces delivered all on the same day, so that you can experience that big reveal moment. We also do it that way so that you aren’t having to meet with different people at different times multiple times over to let delivery men in and out of your home.
The Finished Space
Here are some photos of spaces we’ve walked through this exact process with clients on.
